I heard this music on KUSC and fell in love with it instantly. The word appears to be derived from “gnosis”; Satie was involved in gnostic sects and movements at the time that he began to compose the Gnossiennes. From what I remember, I learned this composition by heart in just a few hours. It is possible that Satie may have drawn inspiration for the gnossienne no.1 sheet music of these compositions from a passage in John Dryden’s translation of the Aeneid, in which it is thought the word first appeared: Do not see this window again for the duration of the session.
