Modulus of Elasticity Tension. See “Heat Treatment” and “Tempering”. A chemical analysis of each heat of steel shall be made to determine the percentage of the elements specified including carbon, manganese, phosphorus, sulfur, silicon, chromium, vanadium, tungsten, molybdenum, and cobalt and these values shall conform to the requirements as to the prescribed chemical composition.
Selection will depend upon design, service conditions, and mechanical properties. Consult the alloy supplier for information on the advisability of welding. Distributors will offer small quantity buys while mills will generally only sell large quantities, with delivery times anywhere from 10 to 50 weeks depending on size and form required This material is stocked primarily in Bar Products by 28 distributors but is also available to a lesser extent in Flat Rolled Products, Wire Products, and Shapes.

Formed by machining or forging and then machining. Historical Version s – view previous versions of standard. Preheat at F before heating for hardening. The maximum Brinell hardness and minimum Rockwell C hardness for the tool steels are given. See “Forging” and consult the supplier for information on working at lower temperatures. Temper at F for a hardness of Rockwell C 60 to Anneal at F and slow furnace cool at 40 F per hour, or less.
Not applicable to this alloy. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
Cold working may be accomplished with the ashm in the annealed condition. Two intermediate high speed tool steels designated as M50 and M52 are also covered.
Unless otherwise specified, material asgm be made by an electric melting process. The M2 alloy has somewhat better wear resistance than M1. Primarily used for cutting tools.
Forge at F down to F. Do Not forge below F.

This abstract is a brief summary of the referenced standard. It may be shaped by grinding but is relatively poor in regard to capability of being ground.

Then heat rapidly from F to F and hold for 3 to 5 minutes followed by quenching in oil, air or salt bath.
